Foreign military presence abroad

The impacts of foreign military presence extend beyond relations between states  they also form a network of everyday interactions and experiences among people living nearby, often just beyond the fence of a U.S. or NATO base. These processes and mechanisms give rise to new spatial forms, creating a distinct type of place and new landmarks on the map.

What drew me to study foreign military presence?

During my research, I became fascinated by the everyday reality of communities living near foreign military bases.

These places are often seen through the lens of geopolitics, but what about the people who live next door?

I wanted to explore how such presence shapes social life, local economies, and the environment – and how locals perceive it. This curiosity became the foundation of my doctoral work.

What does the research uncover?

My dissertation paints a multi-layered picture of the impact of foreign military bases in Poland.

Through surveys, interviews, and several analysis, I explored how local communities experience both opportunities - like economic growth and cultural exchange – and challenges, including environmental strain and social tensions.

My work shows that foreign military presence is not just a strategic matter; it touches the daily lives of people in very tangible ways.
